Adjustment to illness or diagnosis
This is related to the psychological impact of ageing, pain, illness or chronic conditions. Situational depression or anxiety or compliance issues are very common in this category. This is not limited to the person going through the challenge but can also apply to significant carers or family members. For most of us we continue trying to cope with our daily lives even when we might be affected by significant health changes and challenges.
We do this without really recognising the impact it has on us, but this impact can become more evident when we start to notice that our tolerance level has dropped. We find ourselves feeling overwhelmed or notice that our confidence level has dropped. We might find that we feel an underlying sadness. This can often represent us processing our situation without being conscious about it. This process can be assisted and significantly shortened by coming to see someone trained in managing changes to our health status.
Health Risk Behaviour
Do you feel you require some change in your life whether regarding a specific health issue such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, weight loss, stress etc or a lack of medical compliance to treatment. Coming to talk and work with someone who is trained in Health Psychology helps you to understand your behaviours and their triggers, or the underlying attitudes that put your health at risk. The approach is motivational in nature and we offer health coaching for lifestyle behaviour change such as smoking/alcohol cessation and weight loss. We form an alliance and help you to overcome your difficulties with self compassion and strategies that are long lasting and encouraging.
Sometimes things happen in our lives that make us feel overwhelmed and like we are unable to cope in the manner we would like to. This can be due to illness, pain, changes in circumstance, grief, relationship difficulties, parenting difficulties etc. This may present as low mood or depression, panic or anxiety , excessive worrying , stress behaviour or psychosomatic symptoms . We will help you to develop strategies to help you put yourself back in control and feel like you have choices again. You will be encouraged to be more self compassionate so that you can have more lasting feelings of coping when tough times come around.
We have a special interest in complex medical cases, chronic disease, diabetes adjustment/compliance and pain management.
